Fishing is one of the pillars of the Port of A Coruña and one of the great drivers of the city’s economy. As a leader in Spain, with an average of 30,000 tonnes annually of fresh fish and seafood, it generates a turnover of around €70 million per annum in first sales, and has created some 10,000 jobs.

The evolution such a strategic sector for A Coruña is closely tied to the opening of the current fish market, which has become a European benchmark due to its direct self-management model, the modern facilities and the guarantees regarding safety and hygiene. This innovative system, pioneer in Spain, integrates in the Board of Directors all the members of the fishing community, from shipowners to wholesalers and auctioneers.

The facility, located on the Linares Rivas dock, is noted for its scale, open spaces, hygiene, good access and the facilities in which its operators and users work. The fish market building has 31,341 square metres of useful floor area. Its elongated shape meets the needs of the sector: a broad frontage on the waters’ edge and a façade with access for large cargo vehicles.

The Fish Market is the main infrastructure for the fishing activities of the port of A Coruña, which has two wharfs specifically devoted to this sector. The wharf consisting of the Linares Rivas and La Palloza docks, part of the Del Este dock and the third line of San Diego are solely for the sale and handling of fish. At the Oza dock are the departments for shipowners, supply warehouses, net makers and other facilities, as well as the jetties for the mooring of the vessels.

Another of the Fish Market’s important assets is the presence in the port area of large distribution centres for the major retail complexes, which have big warehouses and need a constant volume and large quantities of merchandise, which they purchase at the A Coruña Fish Market for distribution to their points of sale all around the country.
