Principles governing the port of A Coruña's environmental conduct

As an extension of its management system to all port users, the Port Authority, the Board of Directors, in its sitting on 29 April 2015, approved the second version of Environmental code of practice; based on the principle of self-regulation from the environmental policy code of the European Sea Ports Organisation (ESPO), this Code establishes the principles that will serve as guidelines for each and every one of the workers, service providers, users of services and facilities, holders of concessions and authorisations, and anybody conducting any type of economic activity in the port's service, in order for them to assume environmental protection as part of the port's culture.

The code provides references for identification of and recommendations on the application within the port of the environmental legislation, knowledge of which is essential for the proper management of environmental risks derived from port activities, or in order to obtain environmental rebates. In addition to regulating port activity from the perspective of its effects on the environment, its set of rules takes on particular relevance for those users in the port which subscribe to the code and, by determining the desirable conducts, supplements the means requirements and plans set forth in Article 62.2 of the aforesaid Royal Legislative Decree 2/2011 and the extensive environmental legislation currently in force.

This environmental code of practice is not a rigid document, rather it is flexible and open; it can, has been, and must be modified and completed in line with the evolution of environmental regulations and the equipment and practices of Port work, maritime trade, or when new centres of work or environmental and technological aspects arise and need to be addressed.

The code has been divided into five chapters: Presentation (Chapter 1), General Regulations for Environmental Aspects (Chapter 2), Technical Instructions for various activities conducted within the port (Chapter 3), a specific section on Climate Change (Chapter 4) and a Glossary of the terms employed (Chapter 5).
